The name comes from "Oltre Senda", that's to say "over the path": as a matter of fact the village is placed over the street that crosses the Serio Valley.

Oltressenda is composed of two towns, Nasolino and Valzurio and it is placed, for the larger part of its land, on the right side of Ogna stream (affluent of the Serio river).

Nasolino is the main town, Valzurio is higher.

Other small picturesque districts are Dosso, Bricconi, Spinelli, Colle Palazzo, Piazza, Stalle del Moeschel.

In the past the economy of this zone was based on the exploitation of rural and forest resources and on mining industry, nowadays on wood carving and tourism.
